I've never met Fowler so won't make any direct comments until I do so. However as one who has guided natural history tours in Northern Australian rainforest, where you can die as easily as on the Amazon, I do have a perspective to offer. The outright best guide I know in that terrain is an ex railway worker, former egg collector and pure bush genius who's also a compulsive liar. Some here refer to him as a well balanced guy meaning he has an extremely large chip on each shoulder.
The guy sullied his nest badly by publishing photos of what he claimed to be a new species of parrot for Australia but alas they were no more than retouched, photoshopped images of a still common species and the ruse was detected within minutes. But as there's no such creature as bad publicity his own tours have become more popular with the punters, one of whom happens to be a friend of mine and sent me pix he'd taken of the guy with a Taipan on his arm. The so called Taipan was a harmless Brown Tree Snake.
My point is that rainforest harbours characters and some of them are fond of some big noting and free with the truth, particularly when they think can get away with a yarn. Maybe Fowler is that category? Like I said I'll reserve judgement until I meet the man and spend time with him in the jungle.

Mike, thank you for the encouragement and for the response to my questions. Sorry if there was a mis-understanding. I didn't mean to be misleading when I said "If I told you that I was a mostly sedentary 60 year old...". I'm actually 35. I was trying to throw out a hypothetical scenario that would give me a better idea of what kind of race this is. Re-reading, I can see that I didn't lay that out very well.

That being said, I have some friends that might be interested in getting our own raft together. Otherwise, we'd be row-row-rowing down the Amazon together for sure.

Hopefully I'll see you down there in September!

Hi Bill

Could I check whether I can book a trip for two on 13 - 16 June? Our flight back to London departs at 19:05 from Lima on 16 June. Could I check the rates you are going to charge for this. We hope to make to the Pacaya-Samiria reserve.

Thanks
Helen
