Meet Us At La Noche, One Of My Favorite Restaurants in Iquitos Peru

Post updated with new information on March 8, 2010

Unfortunately this previously fine establishment has recreated itself as a karaoke bar. I am removing it from my favorite restaurant list.

Join me for breakfast most mornings at 8:00am at La Noche.

La Noche is the place to be for breakfast in Iquitos Peru. You can find Mike Collis and I there most mornings at 8:00. If the weather is cloudy and overcast we sit at one of the outside tables. If it is too sunny we sit inside. A good choice for you would be a table under the awning on the upstairs balcony with a great view over the river.

Part of what makes La Noche one of my favorite restaurants is its location on the Malecon or Boulevard, at # 177, between Napo and Nauta, overlooking the river. It is a pedestrian walkway so no motocars going by makes it one of the quietest places to eat or hang out. Also it is only a couple of dozen paces from my home and office.

I have tried everything on the menu. These are what I keep coming back to.

Bacon doesn't get better than this.

I usually get the Executive Breakfast; Fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee with milk, toast with butter and jam, two fried eggs, with some of the best bacon in the world, or ham, for S/ 12 soles, around $4

For special occasions I like the Amazon Breakfast; Fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee with milk, toast with butter and jam, cecina (smoked lean pork, fried) with mashed and fried platanos (bananas) called tacacho, with an onion, pepper, cilantro salsa, for S/15 soles, around $5

Another good choice for me for breakfast is the triple vegetarian sandwich, with avocado, tomato, and a hard fried egg, with a mayo sauce, for S/10, around $3.33. I usually get a fresh blended pineapple juice to go with this sandwich for S/2 soles.

I eat lunch at La Noche two or three times per week. Mike Collis is there at 12:10 nearly every day. Some of the other ex-pats, the locals, and tourists meet and mingle there so it is an interesting place to be. By noon the outside tables are in the shade, or the upstairs balcony is a good choice for the view.

For lunch I like the Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich, (Sandwich de Pollo Hawaiano),
Chicken breast, melted cheese, bacon, pineapple, and lettuce on a warm baguette, for S/15 soles or $5

The Mixed Gaucho Sandwich is beef tenderloin and cheese, with tomato, lettuce and special mustard sauce on a baguette for S/18 or $6

The hamburgers used to be horrible here, but I helped fix that. Now I like the Hamburger Americana with cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, and pickles served with french fries for S/18 or $6

Or a simple cheese burger for S/10 or $3.33

For dinner, the best meal on the menu for me is the Patarashca-Pescado Lo Shipibo, a grilled dorado fish fillet, wrapped in exotic jungle leaves, and steamed in its own juices along with chopped onion, tomato, and cilantro, served with deep fried yuca. S/25 soles or around $8.33

Causa Rellena is another interesting choice. Mashed potato stuffed with minced meat served with an onion and cilantro salsa. S/12 or $4

La Noche is located on a quiet pedestrian walkway overlooking the river just a few steps from the Dawn on the Amazon office.

One of the best benefits of La Noche is the location. Around 5:00pm the clouds over the river start to change color in the golden light. The Snowy Egrets come in to roost. No motocars going past makes it one of the quietest places to hang out. In the evening it makes a great place to drink a cold beer and watch the people go by. There is usually an interesting collection of ex-pats, tourists, and locals mingling, and with a little luck the conversation can be compelling.

Good article, Bill. Soon, though, you will have to post an article called, “Meet us at the jungle juice Bar.” I can’t wait to read it.
