La Casa Fitzcarraldo, jungle garden
Our favorite swimming pool in Iquitos Peru is at La Casa Fitzcarraldo, located at Avenida La Marina # 2153, a 10 minute moto-carro ride from the Plaza de Armas. The pool is surrounded by a luxurious growth of blooming garden, landscaped to resemble the jungle with a profusion of orchids and bromeliads growing in the trees.

La Casa Fitzcarraldo is more than just a pool and jungle garden. It is a famous large house that has been converted into a bed and breakfast style hotel. It is the only one I know of with a three story tree house full of blooming plants hanging hammocks, parrots, macaws, and an Ocelot. All of the floors and wood trim are mahogany. The tables and furniture are custom made from purple heart, a beautiful tropical hardwood. Notice the long heavy tables under the thatch roof by the pool are thick single slabs cut from gigantic purple heart trees.

The house is owned by Walter Saxer’s lovely, charming daughter Micaela, Mr. Saxer was the executive producer of Fitzcarraldo, the most famous movie made in Iquitos. Fitzcarraldo is considered by many to be the most difficult movie to produce in the history of cinema. They started in 1977, and completed filming in 1982.
La Casa Fitzcarraldo was the home base for the movie stars and crew during the long production and filming of the movie, and still contains some memorabilia from that time period.
Walter still lives at La Casa Fitzcarraldo several months per year. If you can catch him in the right mood to reminisce about those historical days with Warner Herzog, Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards, Mick Jagger, the dangers, sickness, and the incredible work they did together, it will be worth your time to listen.
When you arrive at La Casa Fitzcarraldo, there is a two way speaker system mounted on the wall to the upper left as you face the main door. Press the dark brown button, and wait for someone to ask your purpose, and open the door. The cost is S/ 5 soles per person to use the pool and hang out in the jungle garden or tree house. They are open 9:00am, until 6:00pm, and sell beer, soda pop, coconuts, and delicious home cooked meals.

Jungle Garden
Rooms rent for around $40 to $80 depending on the room, and include breakfast, one way airport pickup, access to the pool, the jungle garden, hammocks hanging in the shade, and a measure of peace and quiet, a valuable and rare commodity in Iquitos
You can have a look at the La Casa Fitzcarraldo web site.
Marmelita and I lived at La Casa Fitzcarraldo for 6 months several years ago. We still try to stop in once ever couple of weeks to enjoy the pool and jungle garden. I am sure you will enjoy the oasis that is La Casa Fitzcarraldo and it is listed in my article, Hotels of Iquitos Peru, Reveiws, Rates, and Recommendations.

[...] La Casa Fitzcarraldo, Avenida La Marina #2153, not really a hotel, rather a large famous house with possibly the best pool and jungle garden in Iquitos. It is certainly the only place with a three story tree house. It is the house that Warner Hertzog and Walter Saxer bought for a home base to produce the most famous movie made in Iquitos, Fitzcarraldo, considered by many to be the most difficult movie ever made. Marmelita and I lived here for several months. There are a lot of good things about La Casa Fitzcarraldo, but it is a 10 minute moto-kar ride from the Plaza de Armas and our office. If getting away from the hustle and noise of the city center sounds good to you, I recommend La Casa Fitzcarraldo. Cost $40-$80, depending on the room.
